Fundraising - 20th Anniversary Dinner and Auction

20th Anniversary Dinner and Auction The Japanese Immersion Program's 20th Anniversary Dinner and Auction is only a few weeks away. We really appreciate the outpouring of support that we've received from families, teachers and the community. This year's dinner and auction is structured a little bit differently than in the past. The funds raised will support the Intern Program, 5th grade Cultural Exchange and 8th grade Research Residency.

RICHMOND CLASSROOM ART PROJECTS | Schedule
Please contact Holly Watson if you would like to help.

As part of the Oya No Kai auction fundraiser in November, each grade at Richmond will be making a piece of art to be auctioned. For the most part they will be made during art classes during the school week with Ms. Dacklin, but parent support would be greatly appreciated either during the art classes and/or in the finishing production phases.

We also ask that each student's family please contribute a donation of $3.00 per student to help fund the supplies for the projects. This donation can be given directly to Maya Mori or Sarah Stephens of Oya No Kai who will be at the coffee table in the cafeteria every morning up until the auction. If you cannot find them, or are not at school at that time you can also drop off the donations in the Oya No Kai box in the office. Our hope is that each class then "donate" their art piece to the auction and they sell for a lot more than they cost to make, so we can help support the 5th grade and 8th grade trips and the interns.

Listed below the projects per class/grade and some of our volunteers for each project. If you know these parent volunteers please feel free to work with them directly to assist their efforts. If you have any questions, or any other input, please contact Holly Watson.

The projects are as follows:

Pre-K : Art glass dishes or sculpture. This project will be coordinated with glass artist Karumi Connely. She will supply the glass and fire the pieces together, but I'm sure would appreciate help while working with the students.

Kindergarten : A Mt. Hood and coordinating Mt. Fuji collage pieces. Jen McIlhenny and a few other mom's have volunteered to help, but we could definitely use more! We need help with supplies and classroom production.

1st Grade : This grade is doing self-portraits that will be scanned into a graphics program, printed and then framed. I suspect we will have two pieces. Katharina Cahen is helping with the mounting and framing, but we really need a point person who can scan and print or have the images printed at a print shop. We also need help in the art class time.

2nd Grade : This grade will be doing a similar project to the Kindergarten class, only they will be making two different images of the "The Great Wave" by Hokusai. They will be collages as well. We need help with supplies and classroom production for sure! Jen McIlhenny is also helping with this project and has her hands full.

3rd Grade : We are making two sculptures of 1000 cranes. We definitely need help in the art classes! And will also need help stringing the cranes together to make the final pieces. You can contact me if you would like to help with this one.

4th Grade : The fourth graders will be making images of Portland drawn on 3" x 3" mini canvases and then mounted onto two large varnished boards. Meg Matsushima has graciously volunteered to aquire the drawing supplies, but we will most likely need help in the class room and definitely for the mounting of the images onto the boards.

5th Grade : The fifth grade has already started on their pieces. They are making the centerpieces for the tables at the auction. They will be ornamental platters with images of Japan layed out in a collage like assembly.

We are really excited about all of these projects. Please help your class if you can, but if you cannot, I hope you will get a chance to see your child's artwork! We are 3 schools, 2 languages and 1 community and it really does take our entire community to support this event.

For these and other ways to support the 20th Anniversary event please contact onkauction@gmail.com or Sarah Stephens at (503) 753-1239 or Maya Mori at (503) 367-9893.

We look forward to working with you all.

Thank you,
Sarah Stephens
