Volunteer Needs and Homestay Opportunities
There are many ways to be involved in and support the Japanese Magnet Program. Please consider any (or all) of the following:
Being a host family
The demand to provide homestay experiences for Interns, visiting students and guests continues to increase. Please consider hosting as part of your commitment to the program. It is a fabulous opportunity to bring Japanese culture into your home, help out the JMP, and develop lifetime friendships. Homestay visits can be as short as a week or up to 3 months. For more detailed information contact the Oya No Kai Homestay Chairperson (in the directory each year).

Getting involved in Oya No Kai
Oya No Kai is remarkable in many ways. We have an annual budget of $30-40,000, we have no paid employees, and we support and augment a K-12 program through activities, program advocacy and monetary support. This couldn't be done without the active participation of the JMP families.
So what can you do? Start by thinking about what you like to do. Are you good at organizing information? Try being Directory Coordinator. Do you like being involved in fundraising? Contact the Fundraising Chair to see how what is needed. Interested in helping with vision and policy making? You might be interested in a position on the Board. The best way to start is to give a call to a Board member (listed in the directory each year) or talk to someone who has been in the program a while. Your student's experience will be enhanced directly by your involvement.
Volunteer at the School (Richmond, Mt. Tabor OR Grant)
Besides having Oya No Kai membership, parents can be classroom volunteers, Room Parents, PTA supporters, and/or Site Council members. Go where your interests lead you and the program will benefit!
Parents and family members interested in volunteering in PPS classrooms or chaperoning field trips need to fill out a volunteer form and pass a criminal history check. The form may be downloaded here and given to the main office of the school you'd like to volunteer at for processing. Check with the school to verify fees.
