MISSION
Oya No Kai's purpose is to contribute to the successful development of the Japanese Magnet Program (JMP) and to develop a network of mutual support among program families.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
The following is a list of ongoing activities that support Oya No Kai's mission:
- Support various fundraising efforts throughout the year
- Financially support the Japanese intern program that provides native Japanese speakers as aides for the Japanese classrooms
- Provide funds for all JMP teachers for classroom supplies or field trips
- Support the Docent Program for potential students and official visitors
- Support for the 5th grade cultural exchange and the 8th grade research residency
- Support the development of Japanese curriculum at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels
- Increase awareness of the JMP in the community by placing newspaper ads prior to pre-K and kindergarten registration deadlines
- Advocate with school administrators to emphasize the importance of immersion trained teachers
- Sponsor school activities such as Field Day (Undokai) and OMSI overnight
- Support the summer Japanese language day camp, Kurabu
- Support the OMSI Japanese language summer camp, Oregon Shizen Kyampu
- Support JMP middle and high school students in the annual speech contest sponsored by JASO and the Consul-General
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
- Promote homestay experiences by communicating many different exchange opportunities
- Publish and distribute the newsletter, JMP Oshirase
- Maintain the Oya No Kai Web site, including the listservs
- Organize weekend activities for JMP families at Camp Westwind in May
- Maintain and publish a directory of JMP families
- Publish and distribute notices of meetings, special events, or community events of interest
- Participate in local Japanese festivals

Oya No Kai, Inc., is organized exclusively for the following purposes:
- Provide a support group for parents and guardians of children enrolled in the Japanese Magnet Program at Richmond Elementary School and Mt. Tabor Middle School in Portland, Oregon (hereinafter known as JMP); and
- Provide ongoing support for the teachers, staff and other professionals associated with the JMP and support for the JMP; and
- Provide parents and guardians of children in the JMP with ongoing educational, cultural and social activities designed to develop (i) increased awareness and understanding of Japanese culture and (ii) a strong community among parents and children in the JMP; and
- Enhance the educational experience of children in the JMP; and
- Maintain an active liaison with the staff of JMP, Richmond Elementary and Mt. Tabor Middle Schools; and
- Maintain an active liaison with the Richmond Elementary School and Mt. Tabor Middle School chapters of PTA and other organizations associated with those schools.
