Q and A

  • When will the numbers be current?
Now that the books have been reconciled so that our taxes could be done, we have two new priorities: 1) get our books fully reconciled, and 2) form a Financial Committee and meet to discuss changes to our processes, tools, and roles to improve the way we handle our finances. We hope to have our books fully reconciled over the next few weeks or so and the Financial Committee will start meeting soon as well.

  • What does Oya No Kai plan to do for the future?
Once our books are fully reconciled we will plan for the future in terms of our focus, what we will fundraise for, coordinate with other groups on the timing of those fundraisers, and then communicate the plan to everyone. Much of the planning work had already been done last summer and fall with the expectation that our books would be fairly quickly reconciled. Unfortunately that took much longer than expected so we will need to revisit that planning work to make sure it is still relevant. There are many needs in the JMP and we cannot possibly address them all, we must decide on our focus, prioritize the needs that fall into our focus, and then get busy.

  • Why do some of the Class Fund amounts look so odd?
The current 9th grade class shows a negative amount. We have not researched this yet, but it is possible that they may have done additional fundraising that has simply not yet shown up on its balance sheet. We will have this figured out by the time we get the numbers up-to-date.

The current 6th grade class amount looks very high for being after its 5th grade trip. This is because it can take several months before all the costs of the trip work its way though the system. The numbers will drop considerably soon after this date.

The current Kindergarten class amount is zero. This is because all Kindergarten class funds start at zero. Even now that we have a Pre-K class we cannot just roll over funds from the Pre-K to the Kindergarten because the Pre-K has kids in there that don't automatically go to the Kindergarten class the next year. The Pre-K class is essentially two classes in one, some that move directly to Kindergarten and some that stay in Pre-K for an additional year before moving to Kindergarten.

The current Pre-K class shows almost $600. Funds that are raised by the Pre-K will be spent on the Pre-K class. This amount will not roll over to Kindergarten and any unspent funds will remain in the Pre-K class fund for next year.
